Un manifiesto para la ultratraducción / A manifesto for ultratranslation by Antena

Jen/Eleana Hofer and JD Pluecker, the members of the language justice collaborative Antena Aire, write in this manifesto that “Who we choose to translate is political. How we choose to translate is political. The politics of translation make us ultraskeptical and ultracommitted.” This single manifesto is part of a series of pamphlets Antena produced in the context of and in dialogue with various site-specific acts of linguistic interpretation, various texts of literary translation, and various multimedia and multi-disciplinary exhibits and performances. Though now disbanded, Antena have left us this rich field of action and reflection, critique and possibility. This particular pamphlet details principles core to the whole of their work, including the notion that translators should think as originally, critically, and brilliantly about their positioning as they do about the texts that draw them to translate. As they say, they regard language and systems with equal parts skepticism and commitment, a combination that is nothing less than love. —Farid Matuk
