Denise Levertov. Poetry in Motion (Baltimore), no date. Originally published in Evening Train (New Directions, 1992).

Denise Levertov, perhaps known best for her politically-engaged writing, described her later-in-life turn to Christianity this way: "I have been engaging […] during the last few years, in my own version of the Pascalian wager, and finding that an avowal of Christian faith is not incompatible with my aesthetic nor with my political stance, since as an artist I was already in the service of the transcendent, and since Christian ethics (however betrayed in past and present history) uphold the same values I seek in a politics of racial and economic justice and nonviolence." (From Levertov’s New and Selected Essays. New Directions, 1992)
