The World Is Round & The World Is Not Flat

Round hardcover edition of The World Is Round, bound in red cloth.

The World Is Round is Gertrude Stein’s first (and only) children’s book, originally written in 1939. The story was illustrated by Clement Hurd, who is perhaps best known for his iconic work on Goodnight Moon. This edition of The World Is Round is circular in shape and uses the original linoleum and wood block prints done by Clement Hurd with minor modifications made in 1986 by Hurd and Andrew Hoyem of Arion Press. Arion Press says The World Is Round tells “the delightful story of Rose and her adventures.” Accompanying this edition is a making-of essay titled The World Is Not Flat by Edith Thacher Hurd, Clement Hurd’s wife and frequent collaborator (she was a prolific author of children’s books in her own right). This edition of The World Is Round was printed in an edition of 400 copies.
