Island: Journal from Iceland is a gorgeous and physically substantial book. Encased in an acrylic sleeve and covered in a textured white and black chemise wrap designed in collaboration with Sandra Liddell Reese, this book takes you on a breathtaking journey through the volcanic geography of Landmannalaugar. Inside you will find 12 original watercolor monotypes encased in delicate Abaca paper folios handmade by Rie Hachiyanagi. Each folio is printed on with text typeset by Lucy Brown, reproduced from polymer plates, and printed letterpress by Inge Bruggeman. The text for this artist book began as journal entries by artist Mary Heebner during a three week visit to Iceland during the summer of 1995. During her time in Iceland Heebner read geology texts, natural histories, sagas, and maps instead of fiction in an effort to learn about the land she was on and flesh out her journal entries. Heebner describes her artistic process and goes into greater depth on the Landmannalaugar region on her website. This book was printed in an edition of 60 copies, 10 of which were not for sale.
